Sharon Ridge House

To Stretch, To Flatten

Location: Sharon, Connecticut
Year: 2022
Status: Design
Team: Paul Coughlin, Annie Scheel

This 6,500 square-foot house is located in Sharon Connecticut and situated on a peak of the Taconic Range. The house is nestled into the southeastern facing ridge line with views high over the Housatonic River valley and beyond. Approached from the rear, the house acts as a screen to the view. The view is revealed as you pass through the vestibule towards the east facade. The house is a low single-level series of daisy-chained program groups.  Each zone is offset from the next, breaking down the massing into three distinct zones.  The living, dining, kitchen, and lounge center the three bars. A circulation spline runs north-south, shifting and joining each bar. The spatial intent is to push the inside space out into the vista using soaring ceilings and fully-glazed facades. Bedroom wings flank the central living space offering maximum privacy.  The house opens quietly to the west side of the property with views of meadows and forest. Alternating materials of poured-in-place concrete, wood and glass are composed to compliment the uses, provide light and views, and maintain a connection with the ground.  Inclined roof planes alternate pitch to subtly break up the low profile of the cantilevered roof line. Abundant outside pool, deck, and terrace spaces reinforce the connection with the view and land creating an entire outdoor house.
